Susceptibility of rabbits to Treponema pallidum after infection with Mycobacterium bovis.

Abstract: AustraliaSUMMARY Rabbits stimulated with Mycobacterium bovis (strain BCG) one month before challenge with Treponema pallidum (Nichols) did not show any modification in their development of syphilitic lesions. A second infection with BCG given at the same time and at the same intradermal site as the T. pallidum challenge also failed to protect the rabbits against syphilis. Thus the non-specific activation of cell-mediated immunity by BCG does not appear to protect rabbits against T. pallidum infection even when… Show more

“…Attempts to protect rabbits against treponemal challenge by systemic or local activation of macrophages have yielded conflicting results. Several investigators have failed to demonstrate protection against treponemal infection after systemic activation of macrophages with Mycobacterium bovis BCG (8,9,27) or Propionibacterium acnes (3). Harris et al (11), on the other hand, stated in an early study that the nonspecific in vivo activation of macrophages in rabbits by lecithin or trypan blue causes the early resolution of progressing syphilitic testicular lesions.…”

“…Development of large lesions in the adjuvant and the E. coli control groups and the development of much smaller lesions in the immunized groups (TmpA, TmpB, and TmpC) provided evidence that sensitization to the treponemal antigen must be considered in part responsible for the altered course of infection. Borenstein et al(3) and other investigators(1,(8)(9)(10)30) reported that nonspecific stimulation of the immune system does not promote resistance to T.…”
