“…In the post-PCV-7 period, significant decreasing trends for the incidence of PCV-7 serotypes were found in the total population (R 2 ϭ 0.492; ␤ ϭ Ϫ0.751; P ϭ 0.032) and in children (R 2 ϭ 0.576; ␤ ϭ Ϫ0.798; P ϭ 0.018), without significant trends for oral penicillin nonsusceptibility in the three populations. In previous studies, the association of decreases in PCV-7 serotype incidence with decreases in penicillin nonsusceptibility rates in the current decade was shown by analyzing all invasive isolates (8) and the subset of cerebrospinal fluid isolates (10). In the present study, the significant decreasing trend for PCV-7 serotype incidence found in the total population and in children in the post-PCV-7 period was not accompanied by a decrease in the rate of nonsusceptibility to oral penicillin.…”

“…In a post-introduction surveillance study the percentage of reduction in invasive disease caused by PCV7 serotypes was 78%, with 50% reduction in invasive disease caused by vaccine-related serotypes [22]. However, serotype replacement has been reported in surveillances (laboratory-based surveillance system) analyzing invasive isolates along the current decade in Spain [11-13], USA [23] and several European countries [24]. In addition, several studies have shown that PCV7 vaccination also reduces the nasopharyngeal carriage of vaccine serotypes and increases carriage of non-vaccine types, with an overall rate of pneumococcal colonization unchanged in most cases [25-28].…”

“…Despite the irregular regional PCV7 uptake in Spain, vaccination has resulted in a decrease in PCV7 serotypes among invasive isolates from children and adults (due to herd effect). This reduction has been associated with a decrease in the proportion of isolates non-susceptible to penicillin [11-13]. However, as in other countries, these changes were associated with an increase in the prevalence of non-PCV7 serotypes causing invasive disease [11].…”

“…Several studies from Spain have examined the issue, with some areas reporting complete serotype replacement with no net effect of the vaccine on IPD incidence [5, 5455] while another reported no increase in NVTs [56]. The Spanish data are further complicated by regional differences in blood culturing practices and by increases in blood culturing and reporting rates since the introduction of PCV7 [4344, 57]. In France, the vaccine had no overall effect in the most recent national study of pediatric meningitis in children under 5, though it showed a benefit in those under 2 [58].…”
