Susceptibility of Gardnerella vaginalis to cephradine

Abstract: The activity of cephradine and the influence of pH on its activity against 70 Gardnerella vaginalis strains were determined. Serial dilutions of cephradine (0.062 to 256 gug/ml) were incorporated into Dunkelberg agar, inoculated with a Steers replicator, incubated in 5% CO2 for 48 h, and examined. The minimal inhibitory concentrations for 90% of the isolates were 16 and 8.0 ,ug/ml at pH 7.0 to 6.0 and 5.5, respectively.

“…While many treatment options exist for bacterial vaginosis, none are completely efficacious (3,7) due to the complexity of the perturbation of the vaginal flora in bacterial vaginosis, including the role of local pH on the activity of antimicrobial therapy. A search for a more effective therapy is ongoing (5).…”

“…One group of women needing an alternate therapy, ie, pregnant women, also have the potential for the more serious consequences of this disease. Some promising in vitro studies with cephradine 35 and local sulfonamide preparations 36 have been done with in vivo studies, hopefully, to follow shortly. Additionally, nonpharma‐ceutical therapy such as acidification of the vagina with Acigel or vinegar douche and reestablishment of lacto‐bacillus with yogurt could be considered based upon some evidence that the pH of the vagina may make the difference between colonization and infection.…”
