Survival of Seedlings of An Alpine Clover (Trifolium Nanum Torr.)

Abstract: Survival percentages of Trifolium nanum seedlings in Colorado at 3,932 m altitude were 82.1, 55.8, and 27.5, respectively, at the end of the first, second, and third summers. Data on seedling substrates and growth are also presented.

“…Ostbye, 1975;Wielgolaski & Kfirenlampi, 1975). In numerous previous studies, summer drought has been concluded to be the chief obstacle to ecesis for various plant species living in boreal, arctic and alpine environments (Brink, 1964;Bonde, 1968;Bliss & Bell, 1980;McGraw & Shaver, 1982).…”

“…Environmental conditions in some alpine habitats are stressful for germination and seedling establishment of plants because of the short time available without snowcover (Bonde 1968). In alpine ecosystems, seedling establishment occurs either from seeds in the seed bank or seed rain (Chambers 1995) and has been observed to be strongly dependent on the dispersal mode and the successional stage of available sites (Stöcklin and Bäumler 1996;Niederfriniger-Schlag and Erschbamer 2000).…”

“…Observations also revealed that survival percentage improved with the addition of manure and litter at both sites. Addition of litter and manure increased moisture-retaining capacity of soil and protect plants from drought, a key mortality factor (Bonde, 1968;Bell and Bliss, 1980). Cultural practices may further improved survival (Manjkhola and Dhar, 2002).…”
