Survival in B-Cell Primary Ocular Lymphoma 1997–2014: A Population-Based Study

Abstract: This study sought to explore the prognostic factors in a large retrospective cohort of patients with B-cell primary ocular lymphoma (POL) from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. There were 2778 patients with B-cell POL whose complete clinical information was listed in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database between 1997 and 2014. The epidemiology, therapeutic measures, and clinical characteristics were listed as descriptive statistics. Survival analysis was conducted by … Show more

“…The increase in the incidence has been hypothesized to be linked to the increased number of immunosuppressed and immunodeficient individuals, increased life expectancy, and improvement of diagnostic tools 1,4 . Few reports studied the prognostic factors of the tumor 2,5 . They found that individuals aged ≥60 years, diffuse large B-cell type lymphoma, and nonconjunctival tumors were all associated with poorer survival rate 2,5 .…”

Liu and Zheng 5 used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database for the period between 1973 and 2014 to study POL.…”

“…OAMZL is an indolent disease, with a slow progression or stable disease without any treatment. The median OS time is about 159 months (10-years OS 54,7%) in patients treated with radiotherapy in combination with chemotherapy, 103 months (10years OS 42,6%) in patients treated with chemotherapy only, 93 months (10-years OS 36,8%) in patients treated with radiotherapy only and 60 months (32,5%) in patients without any treatment (Liu et al, 2018). Local recurrence is common, with 5-years relapse free survival rates of 65%; recurrence in the contralateral orbit is a frequent event after radiotherapy.…”

“…5,6 The incidence of ocular lymphoma is low due to the lack of lymphoid tissue, and the majority of cases are primary. 7,8 Primary ocular lymphomas (POL) can be intraocular or adnexal in location. Ocular adnexal lymphoma is the most common primary orbital malignancy in adults.…”
