Survival from colorectal cancer in Germany in the early 21st century

Abstract: Background:Colorectal cancer is the most common cancer in Germany and the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women. The aim of this study is to provide detailed analysis of recent developments in survival of colorectal cancer patients using newly available data on a national basis. Methods:We included data from 11 German cancer registries covering a population of 33 million inhabitants. “…Such an approach has been taken, for example, in a recent collaborative study on cancer survival in Germany, where new cancer registries have been established in recent years, and a decision had to be made which cancer registries to include in the joint analysis. 31,32 In the longer run, DCO proportions reflect underreporting to a greater extent, even though they are affected by multiple other factors, in particular cancer prognosis. For some cancers with relatively high proportions of late deaths, such as breast cancer or prostate cancer, several percent units of DCO proportions might still be explained by cases diagnosed prior to registration even as late as in the 10th year of registration.…”

“…Approximately one million new cases are diagnosed every year and 500,000 deaths are reported annually worldwide (2). During the last decade, screenings for early diagnosis and staging as well as improvements in surgery and therapy have increased the survival of patients with CRCs (3,4). However, tumor progression to a highly advanced, metastatic stage (mCRC) still decreases the overall 5-year survival rate to 8% to 10% (5).…”

“…Speziell bedeutet dieses, dass axiale Schnittfüh-rung, ausgedehnte Gewebeentnahme und mehrfarbige Randfärbung zu einer signifikant höheren und genaueren R1-Rate führen als herkömmliche Dissektionstechniken [40]. [19]. Kolon-und Rektumkarzinome haben viele Gemeinsamkeiten in Ätiologie und Histologie, unterscheiden sich aber in der präoperativen, der operativen und der adjuvanten Therapiestrategie [39].…”
