Survival changes in Patients with Synovial Sarcoma, 1983-2012

Abstract: Background: Synovial sarcoma (SyS) is a rare malignancy that typically invades the extremities and occurs predominantly in adolescents. Studies on incidence and survival in SyS that were based on a large population had not been reported yet. Methods: To evaluate changes in incidence and survival in SyS over three decades, we accessed data on SyS cases in each decade between 1983 and 2012 (1983-1992, 1993-2002, and 2003-2012) from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. The survival diff… Show more

“…In addition, racial and socioeconomic status (SES) inequalities continue to increase in the healthcare system, and more importantly, the eye-popping gaps have been confirmed to be associated with survival imbalance among cancer patients [15,16]. Hence, we analyzed the general trends of incidence and survival as well as the survival trends by race, age, and SES via a population-based database in the U.S.A.…”

“…Previous studies reported metastases in 50% of those cases, while the 5-year survival is 60.5% (6,12,13). Additionally, some studies have shown a 10-year survival rate ranging between 24 and 68% (6,(12)(13)(14). The most common metastases are found in the lungs, followed by lymph nodes, bone and liver.…”

“…It is of note that synovial sarcoma can occur in any region and at any age, but the peak incidence is the third decade and the most common site, the extremities (5). The incidence of synovial sarcomas was 0.9 in 1984, while in 2012 it was found to be 1.548/100,000 population (6). Older age, tumor size >5 cm, as well as trunk location have been characterized as risk factors for late stage disease.…”

“…Survival did not substantially improve over the last three decades. 2,3 Patients with localized disease have a 10-year survival rate of 69% that drops to below 10% in patients with metastatic disease, 4 illustrating the need for better treatment options for patients with advanced stages of SS. Multiple trials are running using inhibiting molecules to target metabolic pathways in SS and other trials target SS with monoclonal antibodies.…”
