Survival Benefits of Kidney Transplantation With Expanded Criteria Deceased Donors in Patients Aged 60 Years and Over

Abstract: In elderly patients, transplantation with an ECD kidney was associated with higher survival rates than remaining on the waiting list. This result suggests that the identification and use of ECD kidney grafts should be optimized, given changes in the characteristics of potential donors and recipients.

“…From the kidney transplant point of view, this has led to the utilization of sub-optimal donors such as donors older than 60 or with high comorbidities. Despite this, the 5-year survival rate of patients transplanted from expanded criteria donors is significantly better than those on dialysis being 86.3 versus 67.3 %, respectively [1].…”

“…In a retrospective study of 2845 French transplant recipients aged 60 years, ECD kidneys were associated with poorer graft survival compared to non-ECD kidneys (Savoye, Tamarelle et al 2007). The difference in graft survival was 6.2% at 12 months and 14.2% at 5 years (adjusted relative risk [RR] of graft failure associated with ECD kidneys compared to non-ECD kidneys was 1.98, p<0.01).…”
