“…It confirms the efficacy of the embryonated egg model as described in previous works in Campylobacter jejuni VBNC cells [10,13,47]. Moreover, two important findings described in this work need to be taken into account.…”

“…VBNC cells of various pathogens have also been recovered in animal models: mice for Vibrio vulnificus [35] and Campylobacter jejuni [10,24]; rat gut for Campylobacter jejuni [45]; chicks for Campylobacter jejuni [10,46]; rabbit ileal loop for Vibrio cholerae [15]; human volunteers for Vibrio cholerae [15] and fertilised eggs for Legionella pneumophilla [21] and Campylobacter jejuni [11,14]. For this species, it appears that inoculation of VBNC cells in the yolk sac of embryonated eggs was the best way to obtain recovery at a culturable state [11,14,47]. In contrast, Medema et al [31] did not succeed in recovering VBNC cells of Campylobacter jejuni after inoculation in fertilised eggs.…”

“…After 48 days of storage, in water containing less than 1 CFU (Colony Forming Unit) per 2 ml as determined by the plate count technique, filtration of the whole bottle of mineral water and enrichment in Preston broth according to the NF-ISO 10272 norm were performed in order to enhance the detection threshold and detect remaining culturable cells (Talibart et al, 2000).…”

“…However, this method is time consuming and laborious, requiring prolonged incubation, selective enrichment, and reduction of the background flora, which should be followed by biochemical identification tests (12,13). Most laboratories are unable to diagnose the anaerobic, microaerophilic, and fastidious bacteria responsible for human gastrointestinal disorders using conventional microbiological methods.…”

“…Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a powerful technique for the detection of the target DNA in various clinical specimens, including fecal samples. However, fecal specimens often contain substances that may interfere with the PCR assay, leading to false-positive or false-negative results (2,4,11,13,15,22). Accordingly, its application in clinical laboratories needs validation.…”
