Survival and failure rates of orthodontic temporary anchorage devices: a systematic review

Abstract: Abstract:Aim: The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature on survival rates of palatal implants, Onplants®, miniplates and mini screws. Material and Methods:An electronic MEDLINE search supplemented by manual searching was conducted to identify randomized clinical trials, prospective and retrospective cohort studies on palatal implants, Onplants®, miniplates and miniscrews with a mean follow-up time of at least 12 weeks and of at least 10 units per modality having been examined clinic… Show more

“…[25][26][27][28][29] Miniplates have been shown to be well accepted as skeletal anchorage by both patients and providers and have turned out to be a safe and effective adjunct for complex orthodontic treatment. 24 However, the success rate of miniplates for skeletal anchorage in orthodontics [30][31][32][33] has not been investigated so thoroughly as that of miniscrews, and research has been limited to adolescent and adult patients.…”

“…Two systematic reviews in the literature report mean overall failure rates of 16.4%. 10,11 Different suggestions have been made to increase survival rates. The basic requirement is sufficient primary stability.…”

“…Of worthy mention is one such paper containing more contemporary data on an additional five studies yielding an increase of over 800 mini-screws in its analysis. 3 However, the overall success rate changes little.…”
