ObjectiveThe purpose of this review was to provide dental professionals with information regarding the various types of zirconia restorations, their mechanical and optical properties, tooth preparation design, and bonding protocol in an effort to enhance the longevity and durability of zirconia restorations.OverviewThe yttria content of zirconia ceramics determines their classification. The mechanical and optical properties of each type are discussed, with an emphasis on the effect of yttria concentration on the properties of zirconia. The processing and sintering methods are also discussed as they have a direct impact on the properties of zirconia. The design of tooth preparation, specifically occlusal reduction, varies depending on the type of zirconia used in each case. Finally, a protocol for zirconia restoration bonding is described to ensure optimal bonding to the tooth structure.ConclusionNot all zirconia restorations are the same. The selection of zirconia type based on yttria concentration, processing and sintering methods, tooth preparation design, and adherence to the bonding protocol are all critical to the success and longevity of zirconia restorations.Clinical SignificanceZirconia restorations are the most commonly used indirect restorative material. The selection of the most appropriate zirconia type based on its yttria content, which determines its strength and translucency, is critical to the success and the longevity of the restoration. Tooth preparation design also influences the strength and translucency of the zirconia. Air‐borne particle abrasion, followed by a ceramic primer and resin cement, can ensure a durable bond to the tooth structure.

Objective To evaluate the effect of ceramic thicknesses, bonding surface (enamel vs. dentin), and preparation design (box vs. no box) on the fatigue survival and failure load of minimally invasive full‐veneer restorations. Materials and Methods Human‐premolars (n = 60) were divided into five test groups (n = 12). All teeth received full‐veneer preparation with the following occlusal/labial thicknesses: standard: 1.5/0.8 mm; thin: 1.0/0.6 mm; ultrathin 0.5/0.4 mm. Preparations for each ceramic thickness were refined in enamel (E‐1.0 and E‐0.5) or dentin (D‐1.5, D‐1.0, and D‐0.5). Control groups DB‐1.5, EB‐1.0, and EB‐0.5 received box preparations. Monolithic lithium disilicate restorations (IPS‐e.max‐Press, Ivoclar Vivadent) were adhesively cemented (Syntac‐Classic/Variolink‐II, Ivoclar Vivadent) and subjected to cyclic mechanical loading (F = 49 N, 1.2 million cycles) with simultaneous thermocycling (5–55°C). All specimens were exposed to single load‐to‐failure. Pair‐wise differences were calculated by using a linear regression model and Student–Newman–Keuls method (p < 0.05). Results All full‐veneers of group D‐1.5, E‐1.0, E‐0.5, DB‐1.5, EB‐1.0, and EB‐0.5 survived fatigue. Two full‐veneers (D‐1.0 and D‐0.5) revealed cracks during fatigue, resulting in an overall fatigue survival rate of 98.1%. Mean load‐to‐failure values (N) were as followed: 1005 (D‐1.5); 866 (D‐1.0); 816 (D‐0.5); 1495 (E‐1.0); 1279 (E‐0.5); 1129 (DB‐1.5); 1087 (EB‐1.0); and 833 (EB‐0.5). Irrespective of ceramic thicknesses, enamel‐based full‐veneers resulted in higher failure loads than dentin‐based restorations. Box preparation reduced the failure loads of thin and ultrathin enamel‐based restorations. Conclusion All tested monolithic lithium disilicate full‐veneer restorations exceeded physiological masticatory forces. Minimally invasive full‐veneer restorations with enamel as a bonding surface and a non‐retentive preparation design showed superior performance. Clinical Significance Enamel‐based non‐retentive full‐veneers made of monolithic lithium disilicate may serve as a reliable and esthetical minimally invasive treatment option for premolars.

This position paper summarizes all relevant aspects of the use of working models derived from digital data in digital and hybrid workflows, aiming to (1) provide the reader with a comprehensive review of the types of models that currently can be produced from a digital file created by an intraoral scanner (IOS); ( 2) critically analyze issues that may undermine or compromise their reliability when requested for the fabrication of both tooth-borne and implant-supported fixed dental prostheses (FDPs); and (3) indicate the procedures to be implemented in order to overcome these issues and produce satisfactory restorations. Materials and Methods: By way of a thorough literature review, the authors highlight the critical issues of milled and 3D-printed models, solid and alveolar, explaining the differences in terms of accuracy and reliability. Results and Conclusions: By describing the peculiarities of models with prepared natural teeth and those incorporating metal implant analogs, the clinical indications for their use are given while proposing the strategies that can be adopted to avoid errors during fabrication or to overcome inaccuracies.
