Survival analysis of osteosarcoma patients: A 15-year experience

Abstract: Introduction: Management of osteosarcoma has evolved considerably for the past two decades and there have been changes of practices especially pertaining to chemotherapy regime. This is a review of our cases in the past 15 years. Method: This is a retrospective survival analysis study of 128 patients treated at University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) from 1997 to 2011. Results: There were 80 (62.5%) male and 48 (37.5%) female patients with the median age being 15 (5–59). Majority had osteosarcoma of extremitie… Show more

“…Our previous study reported 37.9% of the 5-year overall survival rates in Northern Thailand 5 . This finding is comparable with studies conducted within Asia–Pacific region reporting 27–48% of the 5-year overall survival rates that were much lower in comparison to western regions with rates between 60 and 70% 6 . Major factors of the poor clinical outcomes were presence of metastasis and not completing treatment regarding patients’ non-compliance to treatment regime.…”

“…In the training cohort of 856 samples, 39.3% of patients died at or before their last follow-up, over 90% of whom died from cancer-specific causes. 5-year OS and CSS rates were found to be 64.0% and 65.8%, respectively, which were at the higher end of what was previously reported in research articles discussing the survival prediction of osteosarcoma [ 47 49 ].…”

“…The five-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with non-metastatic OS has increased to 70–80% through wide resection surgery combined with multi-drug adjuvant chemotherapy [ 2 ]. Nevertheless, more than 60% patients developed metastasis during treatment with 39% presenting lung metastasis [ 3 ]. Notably, the 5-year survival rate of patients who develop chemo-resistance decreased to less than 20%, supporting in turn a rapid growth of metastatic lesions [ 4 ].…”
