Survival After Colorectal Cancer Diagnosis Is Associated with Colorectal Cancer Family History

Abstract: Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) family history is a known risk factor for CRC development; however, effects of CRC family history on survival after CRC diagnosis are less well-defined. Our population-based analysis investigates whether familial CRC cases exhibit improved survival compared with sporadic CRC cases. Methods: Cases enrolled in the University of California Irvine Gene-Environment Study of Familial Colorectal Cancer from 1994 to 1996 were analyzed, with followup through December 2006. Cases were… Show more

“…Published studies focusing on the prognostic importance of family history in CRC are few [15][16][17][18][19][20][21]. Previous studies have revealed better survival for those with a positive family history in four studies [15,16,19,21], a worse survival in two [17,18], and no survival difference in one [20].…”

“…Previous studies have revealed better survival for those with a positive family history in four studies [15,16,19,21], a worse survival in two [17,18], and no survival difference in one [20]. The study design varied with three studies registerbased [15,17,19] and four a prospective observational studies [16,18,20,21]. Two studies analyzed females only [18,21], one only colon cancer [17] and none confirmed the diagnosis of the relatives with histological reports.…”
