“…6) Many studies have showed that repair is better than replacement in terms of operative mortality, morbidity, survival, endocarditis and thromboembolic complications. 13,14) Although the reoperation ratios are suggested to be similar, there are studies referring to high reoperation ratios in the ischemic mitral regurgitation. 7) None of our patients needed reoperation within the six-month follow-up.…”

“…13,14) The avoidance of these complications, better protected ventricular functions and not having the mechanical valve sound, all refer to the expectation of better quality of life.…”

“…[24][25][26] Accordingly, MVr is more popular, particularly in patients in whom the ventricular function should be preserved carefully. [27,28] The primary goal of mitral valve operation is to heal the disease, while protecting the functional capacity.…”

“…Third, the risk in traditional MV repair is very low. Several large single-institution series (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)16) have reported very low rates of operative mortality and morbidity in patients with nonischemic MR. According to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons database (15), the risk of operative mortality in isolated MV repair (n=4338) was only 1.3% in 2005.…”

“…MV repair procedures range from the relatively simple and reproducible (eg, isolated annuloplasty for annular dilation or repair of a prolapsing P2 segment) to the complex and arduous (eg, bileaflet prolapse or repair of a Barlow's valve). MV repair, although more technically challenging, offers several well-described advantages over MV replacement, including better preservation of LV function, decreased risk of endocarditis, absence of anticoagulation in patients with sinus rhythm, and improved perioperative and long-term survival (11)(12)(13). Furthermore, MV repair eliminates the risk of structural valve dysfunction observed with bioprostheses.…”
