Surveys of the Cosmic X-ray Background

Abstract: We provide a highly concise overview of what X-ray surveys and their multiwavelength follow-up have revealed about the nature of the cosmic X-ray background (CXRB) and its constituent sources. We first describe early global studies of the CXRB, the development of imaging CXRB surveys, and the resolved CXRB fraction. Second, we detail the sources detected in CXRB surveys describing their identification, classification, and basic nature. Third, since active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are the main contributors to the… Show more

“…Second, there are inevitable connections between AGN X-ray and 6 μm luminosities resulting from the SED fitting. Nevertheless, the effect upon Figure 22, compared to other luminosity-luminosity relations, has been minimized because the MIR-X-ray relation is only secondary (Yang et al 2020;Brandt & Yang 2021) and L X, obs , instead of L X (which is directly utilized in the SED fitting), is used.…”

“…SED fitting can provide direct information for LSST sources and thus can serve as a basis for a variety of works in the future. For instance, AGNs are important because supermassive black holes (SMBHs) coevolve with their host galaxies over cosmic time (e.g., Kormendy & Ho 2013;Brandt & Yang 2021; and references therein). In fact, AGN studies will be a pillar of the science that will be performed in the LSST DDFs (e.g., Brandt et al 2018).…”

“…𝑁 > 100) surveyed with multiwavelength observations. Extragalactic hard (>2 keV) X-ray surveys provide one of the most complete ways to study growing black holes in an unbiased way (see, e.g., Brandt & Alexander 2015;Brandt & Yang 2021). A large fraction, and indeed the majority, of the AGN population is obscured and therefore the construction of a complete AGN census requires the identification of both obscured and unobscured sources (see review by, e.g., Hickox & Alexander 2018).…”
