Surveys in northern Utah for egg parasitoids of Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) detect Trissolcus japonicus (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae)

Abstract: The highly polyphagous and invasive brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), has become a significant insect pest in North America since its detection in 1996. It was first documented in northern Utah in 2012 and reports of urban nuisance problems and plant damage have since increased. Biological control is the preferred solution to managing H. halys in North America and other invaded regions due to its alignment with integrated pest management and sustainable practices. … Show more

“…Among the 21 plant hosts registered during the survey, in urban areas, Catalpa bignonioides and Acer platanoides stand out regarding the highest number of egg masses collected and the parasitism rates recorded. A season-long presence of all life stages of H. halys confirms its preference for those two hosts, which was also presented in other recent studies [2,27,37,[69][70][71].…”

“…Three species of egg parasitoids known in the native range of H. halys are also found in the invaded range: Trissolcus cultratus is also native to Europe [ 28 ], while T. japonicus and T. mitsukurii have adventive populations. Trissolcus japonicus is now found in North America and Europe [ 21 , 44 , 75 , 79 ], while T. mitsukurii is found in Italy [ 21 , 62 ], with their distribution ranges predicted to increase [ 13 ].…”

“…Numerous studies have been conducted to assess the parasitoid’s biosafety as part of the requirements to seek approval from the corresponding regulatory agencies for its legal introduction in the USA [ 34 ], Canada [ 20 ], New Zealand [ 35 ], and Europe [ 36 ]. However, in many cases, adventive populations of T. japonicus have also been reported [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 37 , 38 , 39 ]. Trissolcus mitsukurii was also recently found in northern Italy and western Slovenia [ 21 , 25 ].…”
