The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) was developed from a series of earlier military aptitude tests for the purpose of identifying persons deemed suitable for military service. A component of the ASVAB, the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) is currently used as the standard for selecting recruits for each of the Armed Services. It is comprised of several subtests of the ASVAB which tap verbal and quantitative skills. The individual subtests of the ASVAB are combined into composites that are used to predict success in training for a variety of military occupational specialties (MOS).
