The paper revises the ample empirical and theoretical literature on sustainable organizational growth and strategic leadership relating to the critical aspects of the ongoing pandemic, including poverty, social responsibility, public health, and organizational and managerial innovation. Drawing from available COVID-19, management, and sustainable leadership publications released from 2020 to 2021, this paper considers influential studies exploring core business concepts, principles, philosophies, and activities for accelerating, stimulating, and nurturing social and corporate sustainability. The study analyzed the characteristics and interrelation of 133 articles through bibliometric and literature systemization techniques. We shed light on the significant influence COVID-19 has had on financial, operational, and psychological solvency and organizational health to elucidate expectations and implications for businesses worldwide concerning the long-term financial and functional impact of COVID-19. An overview of the relevant studies on the individual, organizational, and external factors relating to novel disease’s relation to sustainability are provided. We emphasize the need for digital transformation following the COVID-19 upheaval and throughout the upcoming years. Some of the generally employed techniques in response to adversity entail portfolio diversification, service delivery innovation, product redesigning, new market development, partnering with competitors and/or complementary service providers, synergizing with other stakeholders, and open innovation.

With the advent of the “Industry 4.0” era, the outbreak of the new epidemic, and the frequent occurrence of economic crises, sustainable entrepreneurship has led to the entrepreneurial ambition of serial entrepreneurs. Although a large number of supportive policies have been recently enacted by administrations at all levels to promote sustainable entrepreneurship among serial entrepreneurs, there is a lack of policy evaluation. In addition, although academics recognize the importance of policy regulation in leading sustainable entrepreneurship, in-depth research on the entrepreneurship policy system is still lacking. Based on this, this paper applied the “policy instrument–policy target” analysis framework and selected Chinese policy texts that support the sustainable entrepreneurship of serial entrepreneurs for textual content analysis. The results of this paper suggest that the synergy of various policy instruments and the appropriateness of the policy instrument–target fit need to be improved. The findings of this paper can provide a theoretical basis and practical implications for governmental entities to guide serial entrepreneurs to prevent social, economic, and environmental risks and achieve sustainable entrepreneurship goals.

Purpose The COVID-19 pandemic has had an uncertain impact on the global economy, especially for entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises that have suffered significant consequences. However, resilience has emerged as an entrepreneurial skill that allows companies to adapt and grow stronger in the face of challenges. Therefore, this paper conducted a literature review to identify the factors that comprise resilience to strengthen training programs for entrepreneurial skills. This study aims to lead to future empirical studies that will provide more understanding and equip professionals with the skills to adapt to crises. Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review was performed, analyzing studies related to entrepreneurship, resilience and crises. In total, 30 empirical studies were analyzed to determine the facts of the crises, the methodologies used and the actions taken to address them. Findings The review identified resilience factors such as attitudes adopted toward the crisis, the characteristics of the business and the entrepreneur, the relationships with institutions, human and social capital and strategic management. These factors can be considered in training programs for resilient entrepreneurs and by the different actors in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, including the universities and public policymakers, who support them. Originality/value This study provides a literature review that focuses on identifying the resilience factors of entrepreneurs who confronted past crises to know how to apply them to overcome the current situation and contribute to post-COVID-19 entrepreneurship. This paper hopes that the findings motivate others to conduct further empirical studies on entrepreneurship and resilience in times of crisis, especially in developing countries and emerging economies.
