This paper extensively reviews and analyses Light Fidelity (LiFi), a new technology that uses light to transmit data as a high-speed wireless connection system from a wide spectrum of domains. An in-depth analysis and classifications of pertinent research areas for LiFi networks are presented in this paper. The various aspects constituting this paper include a detailed literature review, proposed classifications, and statistics, which further is deliberated to encompass applications, system architecture, system components, advantages, and disadvantages. LiFi and other technologies are compared, multi-user access techniques used in LiFi networks are investigated and open issues are addressed in detail. The paper is concluded with a comprehensive taxonomy of literature comparison that has served as the basis of the proposed open issues and research trends.

Performance Analysis of Indoor Light Fidelity Technology Propagation Using Fixed and Movable LED Panels

Light fidelity (Li-Fi) offers communication services with a wide bandwidth and is one of the options for telecommunications services in the future, especially indoor communication. However, Li-Fi requires accurate device positioning for line of sight (LOS) conditions to meet the main requirement for light communication. Conventional Li-Fi design models require a more dynamic transmitter and receiver device settings but can still serve LOS communication well. This study aims to design a Li-Fi communication model by varying the transmitting devices, such as the use of fixed and movable LEDs, and receiving devices, such as the addition of optical rectangle filters, low-pass filters, and trans-impedance amplifiers. The focus of observation includes the effect of changes in wavelength, data transmission speed, transmitter half-angle, irradiance angle, and incidence angle, as well as field of view (FOV) on received power parameters, signal-to-noise ratio, Q-factor, and bit error rate (BER). On the basis of the test results, the performance of all wavelength variations meets the ITU-T standard up to a variation of the transmission distance of 8 m, where the use of fixed and movable LEDs does not result in a significant difference in performance. The test results indicate that the wavelength parameter affects the signal quality due to the spectral response and LEDs emission. For short distances, the wavelength of 450 nm has better performance, whereas for distances up to 8 m, the wavelength of 650 nm has a better performance than other variations. Furthermore, increasing the transmitter half-angle increased the BER value and drastically decreased the Q factor. The use of a smaller FOV is recommended, as shown from the increase in distance resulting in a significant decrease in performance. The proposed system model can also be used for bit rates up to 30 Mbps, although it is only reliable up to 6 m. As for the 40 Mbps variation, the 75° half-angle transmitter, 60° FOV, and 90° FOV variations do not meet the standard. The two system models do not have a significant difference in performance. Thus, using movable LED instead of fixed LED will make the system more dynamic with a well-maintained LOS.

The major problem of using light fidelity (Li-Fi) technology is still limited to the line of sight (LOS) conditions, which poses a challenge to perform bandwidth efficiency to support increased bit rates, especially for indoor use. In addition, the distance between the lamp driver (transmitter) and the receiver becomes a critical discussion to determine the characteristics of propagation losses. Therefore, this study focuses on analyzing the performance of an indoor Li-Fi multiplexing system using a movable LED panel (LP) based on parameters of bit rate and distance variation on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) 2x2 and 4x4. The parameter analysis of signal quality included optical and electrical signal spectrum characteristics, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), bit error rate (BER), and Q-factor parameters. Based on the results, the increase in bit rate and distance significantly increases the BER value and decreases the Q-factor value. Both the 2x2 and 4x4 mux systems can meet standards up to a bit rate of 30 Mbps at a LOS distance of 3 meters, while at a bit rate of 40 Mbps, there are no channels that meet the ITU-T standard. In addition, the quality of the signal received at a distance of 4 meters, the 2x2 mux system can only reach the standard at a bit rate of 20 Mbps for all channels. However, channel 3 and channel 4 on the 4x4 mux system model still have the BER and Q-factor values that meet the standard in the bit rate of 30 Mbps. However, the decrease in the SNR value affected by the bit rate increase and distance is insignificant. Therefore, it becomes an opportunity for further observation of the proposed multiplexing system, detection scheme, or responsivity, and signal processing on the receiver side to be reliable on the higher bit rate.
