Survey on image quality and dose levels used in Europe for mammography

Abstract: Quality assurance programmes are becoming a common practice in the field of mammography. At the present time several recommendations exist and different test objects are used to optimize this radiological procedure. The goal of this study was to check if geographically distant centres using different quality control procedures were comparable when using a common objective way of assessing image quality. The results show that consensus still needs to be found among radiologists to reach a satisfactory level of … Show more

“…The image quality assessment is a significant factor in the decision to accredit a facility. In this context, several groups have developed automated methods to objectively score test phantom images (ACR (Chakraborty and Eckert 1995), TORMAX (Castellano et al 1998), IQI test phantom (Verdun et al 1996) and CDMAM (Karssemeijer et al 1995, Veldkamp andKarssemeijer 1998)). For each test phantom, the automated method gives scores comparable with, but more consistent than, human observer scores.…”

“…A good correlation between the IQI and radiologists' ranking has been observed in a comparative study of mammographic screen-film systems (Hessler et al 1985). It has been successfully used in a study on the influence of anode-filtration combinations (Desponds et al 1991b) and in an image quality and dose study in Europe (Verdun et al 1996).…”

“…This approach was later completed with large scale patient dose studies [12 • ]. Many countries have studied their patient doses too now, and established local DRLs [36,[39][40][41][42]. This happened especially in the frame of screening programmes.…”
