Survey of the Utilization of Regional and General Anesthesia in a Tertiary Teaching Hospital

Abstract: Our prospective observational study suggests that anesthesiology-related reasons may be an important factor for not undertaking these techniques. Although we did not specifically examine the effect on resident education, our study does provide some evidence to support program directors and department chiefs to set up their regional rotations with faculty most likely to perform RA.

“…The factors affecting the applications of RBs are the demands and the expectations of the patients, surgeons' behaviors and timing (4) as well as patient's satisfaction and time are the effective factors to decide the type of block to apply (12). Hanna et al investigated the frequency and causes of not applying RBs in a study and established the first common cause as anesthesiology-dependent, second as surgeon-dependent and third as medical contraindications (16). According to our results, the patient's preference took the highest priority, whereas the surgeon and the time-related reasons took the second and third place.…”

“…Overall, however, the total rate of regional anesthesia as part of a multimodal pain treatment in the United State is low. [2][3][4] At our institution, my colleagues and I have embraced regional anesthesia as part of our perioperative multimodal pain approach. We have accomplished this by directly incorporating regional anesthesia into the balanced anesthetic approaches.…”

“…Such RABA interventions have the potential to impact not only patient analgesia but also patient morbidity. 4 Dr Macachor and his colleagues also highlight another valuable aspect of a RABA-education. We too have noted that our block rooms provide a unique environment for learning regional anesthesia that is relatively free from some of the constraints that exist in an operating room.…”
