Survey of Soybean Weeds in Mississippi

Abstract: A survey was conducted in 2000 across 38 counties in Mississippi on 192 randomly selected soybean fields to assess the most common occurring weeds. Statewide, prickly sida, which was present in 40% of the fields sampled, was the most common. Pitted and entireleaf morningglory were present in 34 and 29% of the soybean fields, respectively. Broadleaf signalgrass and barnyardgrass were the most common annual grasses, and yellow nutsedge was the most common sedge observed. Trumpetcreeper and redvine were the most … Show more

“…Odds ratios among these species were not significantly different (Table 8), indicating an equal chance for these species to coexist in surveyed sites. This is not surprising, because barnyardgrass, johnsongrass, and Palmer amaranth have been reported as the most trouble- (Bryson and Hanks 2006;Rankins et al 2005;Riar et al 2013a,b). Mowing and herbicides have been the predominant methods used to control roadside vegetation for decades (Berger et al 2005).…”

“…Surveys are a useful method for obtaining knowledge or perception regarding a situation or issue and can assist with determining future decisions and directions (Givens et al 2009;Rankins et al 2005;Webster and MacDonald 2001). For example, a 2016 Missouri survey conducted by Bish and Bradley (2017) showed that fewer than 82% and fewer than 50% of pesticide applicators were aware that temperature and vapor pressure, respectively, influence herbicide volatilization.…”

“…Weed surveys are critical to determine these patterns at spatial and landscape scales (Rankins et al, 2005;Korres et al, 2015a, b). Therefore, the quantitative weed data collected through surveys are of great importance for assessing factors affecting weed distribution and development of integrated weed management approaches.…”
