Survey of radiological techniques and doses of children undergoing some common x-ray examinations in three hospitals in Nigeria

Abstract: A dosimetric survey has been carried out in order to investigate typical radiation doses for children undergoing a number of common x-ray examinations in Nigeria. The results presented in this work are derived from the data of 226 children from three different hospitals included in the survey. Assuming the sample is representative of national practice patterns, pediatric chest examinations are the most frequent radiological examinations. Doses were measured by attaching thermoluminescent dosimeters to the pati… Show more

“…Table 4 shows an inter-comparison of the ESDs reported by the various authors. ESD values in Table 4 indicate that the values obtained in this study are higher than the values found by the European Commission (Cook et al 1998, Almen andMattsson 1995, andRibeiro andYoshimura 2008), while less than those found by Ogundare et al (2004). The difference in the ESD values may be attributed to the different methodologies adopted during the radiological procedure at the various centers and countries.…”

“…The project was sponsored by IAEA. Some other sponsored dose measurement activities were also carried out thereafter in Nigeria 3 , 4 , 5 . All the sponsored works carried out their investigations in few hospitals (3 to 4) and in well‐equipped X‐ray diagnostic centers within the southwestern part of Nigeria.…”

“…Ogundare et al, 2004 carried out research on children radiation dose in routine X-ray examination and it was discovered that there are wide variations in dose from hospital to hospital which need to be corrected.…”
