Background: Among the natural radioactive sources, two-thirds of radiation dose received by living tissue is caused by radon and its progeny because it can interact with biological tissue when it is inhaled or ingested. Accordingly, this study planned to measure indoor radon and evaluates its doses in addition to studying metrological parameter to understand the correlation between them. Materials and Methods: This study focused on the indoor radon concentration by two different protocols which are short term and long term. In short term, radon concentration was measured in seven dwellings in Duhok city at the beginning of both winter and summer using RAD7 detector and Airthings Corentium monitor. Then annual effective dose of radon and its decay product to the inhabitance were estimated. In long term protocol, radon concentration was measured continually for one year by fixing Corentoum detector in one building. Results: outcomes showed that the concentration of radon is higher in winter than summer; with range of 1-56 Bq m -3 . The average level of indoor radon concentration in both seasons was 19 ± 6.1 Bq m -3 . The radon and its progeny average annual effective dose were 0.59 ± 0.17 and 0.23 ± 0.14 mSv y -1 in winter and 0.37 and 0.15 mSv y -1 in summer respectively. Conclusion: The results of average indoor radon concentration obtained were considerably less than the action levels prescribed by ICRP. Also, the results indicated that radon concentration negatively correlated with wind speed and positively with outdoor temperature while outdoor humidity effect has almost neglected.

The analysis of the relationship between radon and seismicity was previously carried out in the seismic zone of Vrancea (Romania), positioning the measuring stations on tectonic faults. This article analyzed the evolution of radon under conditions of deep and surface seismicity and the presence of mud volcanoes, as well as fires caused by gasses emanating from the ground. The monitoring area was extended to the Black Sea and the area of the Făgăraș-Câmpulung fault, where a special radon detection system was established and proposed for patenting. The case study was the impact of the earthquakes in Turkey (7.8 R and 7.5 R on 6 February 2023) on the seismically active areas in Romania in terms of gas emissions (radon, CO2). The main analysis methods for radon (we also included CO2) were applied to integrated time series and the use of anomaly detection algorithms. Data analysis showed that the effects of global warming led to variations in seasonal gas emissions compared to previous years. This made it difficult to analyze the data and correlate it with seismicity. Several of the cases presented require more in-depth analysis to determine the cause of the unusually high radon levels. The primary purpose of establishing the monitoring network is to use the gas emissions as seismic precursors, but the measurements are affected by the conditions under which the monitoring is conducted. In some cases, we are dealing with the effects of pollution, and in other cases, more extensive studies are required. One solution we plan to use is to expand the measurement points to locate the source of the anomalies and use weather data to determine the impact of global warming on the measurements. The main conclusions related to the development of a radon monitoring network and, in general, to the emission of gasses in earthquake-prone areas relate to the importance of the choice of equipment, monitoring location, and installation method.

Semi-empirical modeling of the temporal variation of indoor radon concentration over short periods

The time rate of change of the indoor radon concentration is studied in a semi-empirical frame. The differential equation that describes the radon mass-balance inside a room is used, with taking into account all sources of indoor radon. Rather than solving the equation numerically, an analytical form is obtained with applying some approximations that are based on experimental observations. This makes the describing model more realistic and updatable. After fitting some of the parameters to the experimental data, the model is found to be successful for describing the indoor radon concentration over a couple of days. Moreover, the model predicts some important characteristics of the radon flow to the indoors from the soil and from the building materials. For the room considered in this study, it is found that the radon diffusion transfer coefficient inside the building material is 2.06×〖10〗^(-6) m/h, while the radon diffusion and advection transfer coefficients inside the soil are 0.91×〖10〗^(-4) m/h and 1.04×〖10〗^(-3) m/(h.Pa), respectively. The model can also predict the amount of contribution to the indoor radon by any sources that may be unknown. It was found to be 30.61 Bq/(m^3.h). The obtained results show the feasibility and convenience of the model.
