Survey of forkhead domain encoding genes in the Drosophila genome: Classification and embryonic expression patterns

Abstract: Genetic approaches in Drosophila led to the identification of Forkhead, the prototype of forkhead domain transcription factors that are now known to comprise an evolutionarily conserved family of proteins with essential roles in development and differentiation. Sequence analysis of the recently published genomic scaffold sequence from Drosophila melanogaster has allowed us to determine the presumably full complement of forkhead domain encoding genes in this species. We show herein that the Drosophila genome co… Show more

“…FoxJ, FoxL, and FoxQ and FoxN (sensu lato FoxL1+FoxL2, FoxQ1+FoxQ2, Fox1/4 +Fox2/3) were not monophyletic assemblages. Lee and Frasch (Lee & Frasch, 2004) failed to find an orthologous Drosophila gene in FoxJ. Yet our analyses found their orphan taxon DM CG 12632 sister to Ae.…”

“…Neighbor-joining (NJ) is a methodology for the construction of phylogenetic hypotheses that should be used only to produce a starting tree upon which more thorough searches can be performed (Swofford et al, 1996). Nevertheless, our more rigorous analyses share some features in common with those of past (Lee & Frasch, 2004;Mazet et al, 2003).…”

“…2 O-V). In three cases (bowl, CG9571, and D͞fsh), the newly identified CRMs direct patterns similar to their associated endogenous genes (29)(30)(31)(32). The final CRM (bl͞Mir7) is located in the sixth intron of the bl gene and directs a strong anterior domain of expression (Fig.…”

“…All forkhead family members contain the ~100 amino acid, monomeric DNA "wingedhelix" binding domain of the founding members: Drosophila forkhead [Lee and Frasch, 2004] and hepatocyte nuclear factor 3a [Tao and Lai, 1992]. Forkhead gene products play pivotal roles in organogenesis, including patterning and morphogenesis, through the regulation of the proliferation and cell fate specification [Solomon et al, 2003b].…”
