“…In Europe, the frequency of blood type B in DSH cats varies from 0.4% in Switzerland 17 to 33% in the United Kingdom, 15 and in Italy from 7.4% to 12.9% 19,20 . Although the ID Gel‐Test Micro Typing System has high sensitivity in detecting blood type AB, the apparent frequency of this type in our population is comparable to that found in other studies of cats in Europe 14,15,25–27 in which less sensitive methods with monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies and lectin were used. Thus, our findings confirm that the frequency of blood type AB in DSH cats is low.…”

“…In all previous reports from the rest of Europe (Giger and others 1992, Haarer and Grunbaum 1993, Hubler and others 1993, Jensen and others 1994, Knottenbelt and others 1999a, Bagdi and others 2001, Mylonakis and others 2001, Ruiz de Gopegui and others 2004, Silvestre‐Ferreira and others 2004a, b, Arikan and others 2006), the prevalence of type B blood in non‐pedigree cats presents marked geographical variations, ranging from 0 per cent in Finland to 24·6 per cent in Turkey. Previous reports from the USA (Giger and others 1989, Giger and others 1991) showed that the prevalence of type B blood in non‐pedigree cats was also very low (0·2 per cent); later studies have found areas with higher prevalence of type B blood, supporting the idea of the importance of geographical variations when reporting prevalence of feline blood types.…”
