Survey of current materials and impression techniques for Complete Dentures among Nepalese Prosthodontists

Abstract: Background: Impression making is one of the critical factors in determining success or failure of complete denture therapy. The precise reproduction of edentulous foundation is essential for retention, stability, and support of the removable prosthesis. Evidence suggests that there is variability in materials and techniques regarding impressions making for complete dentures. There is little published information on studies conducted among Nepalese Prosthodontists. The purpose of this study was to evaluate curr… Show more

“…Our findings are in agreement with earlier studies. 17,23,25,26 This research exhibited that the majority of participants (45.6%) preferred to use polyvinylsiloxane as a material of choice for the final impression, followed by ZOE impression paste (34.6%) as a second option. It is obvious that there is an increase in the popularity of using elastomeric (non-aqueous) materials.…”

“…4 In Nepal, (73.3%) of dentists favoured using ZOE impression paste, followed by polyvinylsiloxane (11.7%), polyether (11.7%), and polysulfide (3.3%) respectively. 26 One of the major drawbacks of ZOE impression material is the rigidity after setting, which cannot be able to use for recording the undercuts. It was found that the most used impression philosophy in the current study was mucostatic technique (50.4%), which was followed by selective pressure (37.1%) and muco-compressive techniques (13.2%).…”

“…7 A study done by Bhochhibhoya et.al, also found that majority of practitioners in Nepal, utilize ZOE for making fi nal impression in auto-polymerizing acrylic resin made custom trays and preferred selective pressure impression philosophy. 8 The impressions made by students were assessed on the basis of criteria like errors during mixing, fl ow of the material, positioning of the tray, thickness as well as extension of impression material. The most common error was found to be lack of exposure of all tissue stops, which signifi es non-uniform thickness of material within the tray.…”

“…Resin-bonded fixed partial denture (FPD) is a legitimate treatment choice for the substitution of missing teeth in conditions when the protection of the tooth structure is required or the prosthesis assumes a transitional part in the oral cavity [3]. In spite of their inconveniences, for example, more regular rates of deboning than traditionally luted bridges, resin bonded FPDs have favorable circumstances, for example, an minimally invasive preparation, diminished cost and great patient acknowledgment [4]. Fixed prosthodontics is the area of prosthodontics concentrated on for all fixed dental prostheses.…”
