Abstract-The cognitive radio is an emerging technology that enables dynamic spectrum access in wireless networks. The cognitive radio is capable of opportunistically using the available portions of a licensed spectrum to improve the application performance for unlicensed users. The opportunistic use of the available channels in the wireless environment requires dynamic channel assignment to efficiently utilize the available resources while minimizing the interference in the network. A challenging aspect of such algorithms is the incorporation of the channels' diverse characteristics, highly dynamic network conditions with respect to primary users' activity, and different fragmented sizes of the available channels. This paper presents a comprehensive survey on the state-of-the-art channel assignment algorithms in cognitive radio networks. We also classify the algorithms by presenting a thematic taxonomy of the current channel assignment algorithms in cognitive radio networks. Moreover, the critical aspects of the current channel assignment algorithms in cognitive radio networks are analyzed to determine the strengths and weaknesses of such algorithms. The similarities and differences of the algorithms based on the important parameters, such as routing dependencies, channel models, assignment methods, execution model, and optimization objectives, are also investigated. We also discuss open research issues and challenges of channel assignment in the cognitive radio networks.

The channel assignment problem is a complex problem which requires that under certain constraints a minimum number of channels have to be assigned to mobile calls in the wireless mobile system. In this paper, we propose a new scheme, which is based on double band frequency and channel borrowing strategy. The proposed scheme takes into account factors such as limited bandwidth of wireless networks and the capacity of underlying servers involved in processing mobile calls. It aims to ensure end-to-end performance by considering the characteristics of mobile devices. This is achieved by determining the position of users (or mobile stations) in wireless mobile systems. The proposed scheme is simulated in order to investigate its efficiency within a specific area of a large city in Saudi Arabia. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly improves the performance of mobile calls as well as reduces the blocking when the number of mobile call increases.

In a cellular mobile system (CMS), the service area is divided into cells, each of which has numerous channels, which are shared by two types of call -new calls and handoff calls. Giving a higher priority to handoff calls than new calls is common practice. However, giving too much priority to handoff calls will result to excessive blocking of new calls. This work firstly proposes a distributed dynamic channel assignment and reassignment (DDCAR) scheme to satisfy three types of constraint -co-channel constraint (CCC), adjacent channel constraint (ACC), and co-site constraint (CSC), simultaneously. The purpose is to minimize the number of available channels that become unavailable for the assignment to new calls and to maximize the number of unavailable channels that become available for release when calls complete. To provide a higher priority to handoff calls, a fuzzy call admission control (FCAC) scheme, combined with the DDCAR, is proposed herein for implementation at the base station. A 7 × 7 CMS with two traffic patterns is employed as the test example. The test results reveal that the FCAC scheme significantly reduces the dropping probability of handoff calls at the cost of increasing the blocking probability of new calls to an acceptable level.
