“…Figure 3 compares values which have been found at Sado estuary in different dates. TBT level observed in this work at Lisnave site was much lower than what has been observed for the same area in 1990 [520 ng/g TBT (Cortez et al 1993)]. At Comporta area, TBT concentration observed presently was similar to those that have been observed about 8 years ago in areas relatively far from Lisnave area (Diez et al 2005).…”

“…From 2001 to 2003, TBT and DBT have been analyzed in sediment samples of eight Portuguese estuaries (Almeida et al 2007). More localized works have been carried out at Tagus estuary in 1990 and 2000 (De Bettencourt et al 1999;Nogueira et al 2003), Ria Formosa in 1992/1993(Coelho et al 2002, and Ria de Aveiro in 2005 (Sousa et al 2007). In addition, indirect evidence of BT contamination of Portuguese sediments, obtained through imposex levels, has been reported for: Sado and Mira estuaries (sampling between 1993 and1998;Pessoa et al 2001), several sites in Portuguese coastwise (sampling in 2000;Barroso and Moreira 2002), Oporto coast (sampling in 1998; Santos et al 2004), and Ria de Aveiro (sampling between 2002Rato et al 2006).…”

“…Finally, the port of Sines (SCP) is a major industrial port and one of the main ports for the transhipment of containers in the Atlantic and Mediterranean routes. The BT concentrations reported in several surveys (1990)(1991)(1992)(1993) conducted in Portuguese coastal environments (Quevauviller and Donard, 1990;Cortez et al, 1993) were on the higher side, with levels ranging from 14 to 12,200 mg kg À1 total BTs in the sediments, with maximum levels recorded in the Sado estuary.…”

“…The results of this in situ study suggest that both tested salt marsh plants contributed for TBT and DBT remediation in sediments from Ria Formosa, where the levels of butyltin contamination were much higher in the past (Cortez et al 1993), when TBT has been included in the paint of boats as antifouling agents. In Ria Formosa, plenty of fishing and shipping activities use to occur all over the year.…”
