Three actinosporean types-raabeia, aurantiactinomyxon, and guyenotia-from the oligochaete Branchiura sowerbyi Beddard collected from a crucian carp (Carassius auratus gibelio) pond are described in this report. Compared with the actinospores described previously, the raabeia type presents similar spore shape with the actinospore of Myxobolus cultus, except a much longer caudal process, 250.8 μm (217.5-276.3). The aurantiactinomyxon and guyenotia type significantly differ from other actinospores in its same collective group with different caudal process shape (taper and leaf-like) and dimension, 170.8 μm (167.5-176.3) and 18.5 μm (16.5-20.6), respectively. The partial 18S rDNA sequences of raabeia and aurantiactinomyxon types, and myxospores M. cultus, Myxobolus wulii, Myxobolus pyramidis, and Thelohanellus wuhanensis detected from pond-reared crucian carp were determined. Based on DNA sequences analysis, the raabeia type showed high genetic similarity (99.5-100 %) with myxospore M. cultus Yokoyama, Ogawa & Wakabayashi, 1995 on the gills of crucian carp sampled from the same pond. The aurantiactinomyxon showed no more than 85.2 % sequence similarity with myxospores determined in this report and other myxozoans available from GenBank.

Actinospore infection of oligochaetes collected from the mud of 2 freshwater biotopes in Portugal was studied. Using the 'cell-well plate method', a new synactinomyxon type was found in 2 specimens (1.3%) of the examined Tubifex tubifex oligochaetes from the River Sousa north of Porto, Portugal. In Criodrilus lacuum and Dero digitata specimens collected from the same river, no actinosporeans were released during the 12 wk observation period. Infected oligochaetes were only found immediately post-collection, and no further actinosporean release was recorded in Tubifex specimens kept alive for several weeks. Actinospore infection showed high intensity in oligochaetes in both positive cases. No actinosporean stages of myxosporeans have as yet been described from Portugal. On the basis of spore morphology and 18S rDNA sequence data, the synactinomyxon type presented in this paper differs from those already known and described in the literature.

This chapter provides an overview of the diversity of annelids parasitized by myxosporeans in both marine and freshwater systems and reviews the interactions between myxosporeans and their annelid hosts during the socalled actinospore phase of the myxosporean life cycle. Both host and environmental factors can influence infection. Our chapter examines these influences from the initial infection of annelids through to the release of spores infectious to fish. Topics covered include how myxosoporean infections may relate to the trophic ecology of annelid hosts and what factors may influence dispersal and increase encounter rates of infectious spores with hosts. We also review the little that is known about annelidmyxosporean interactions, focusing on patterns of host specificity, host susceptibility and host immune defenses. Finally, we examine development within and effects on annelid hosts. To illustrate these interactions we draw primarily on examples from the relatively well-studied freshwater salmon parasites Myxobolus cerebralis and Ceratonova shasta, and interactions with their respective annelid hosts.
