Surveillance of donated blood during the 2016 arbovirus outbreak in Brazil

Abstract: Reports of arboviral transmission via blood transfusion may be a cause of concern among asymptomatic infected donors. This study evaluated the presence of arboviruses in donated blood products during the 2016 outbreak in Vitória da Conquista (Bahia-Brazil). Serum samples (n = 676) were screened for ZIKV, CHIKV, and the four DENV serotypes using a one-step reverse transcriptase-based Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR). No samples tested positive for any of the targets, whereas positive controls perfor… Show more

“…Similarly, the first report for ZIKV RNA prevalence among blood donors in the USA outside the states with active transmission of this virus revealed a prevalence of 0.001% [18]. Additionally, a recent study performed in blood donors in a north-east Brazilian city (Vit oria da Conquista) with a similar to our sample number, also did not find any RNA-positive sample [19]. On the other hand, our study largely contrasts to the data obtained in Ribeirão Preto city, south-east Brazil, where ZIKV RNA prevalence among blood donors was 2.7% [5].…”

“…The obtained results differ significantly from the ZIKV prevalence obtained for blood donors in the São Paulo State, Brazil 5 and French Polynesia, 4 where it was up to 3 %. On the contrary, our results were concordant with other studies performed in Brazil, especially in Northeast 8 and South Brazil. 9 where the detected ZIKV RNA prevalence was 0.0 %.…”

“…We adopted as a true estimated ZIKV prevalence the mean prevalence obtained from four previous studies examining ZIKV infection in Brazilian blood donors (0.71 %). 5 , 7 , 8 , 9 The minimum sample size calculated to be tested for estimation of the ZIKV prevalence in blood donors was 269 donations; however, we tested a higher number of samples (475 blood donations).…”

“…Contudo existem outras doenças que podem ser transmitidas via transfusão de sangue que não passam pelo processo de exames laboratoriais de alta sensibilidade nos bancos de sangue, como as arboviroses causadas pelos vírus Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, dentre outros (CUNHA et al 2016;BARJAS-CASTRO et al 2016;GA-LEL et al 2017;SHARMA et al 2018).…”
