Surveillance of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in Chinese hospitals - A five-year retrospective study

Abstract: Introduction: Antibiotic consumption is associated with the development of antibiotic resistance. Our aim was to study the relationship between antibiotic consumption and carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) in three public general tertiary hospitals from 2011-2015 in the eastern, western and central regions of China. Methodology: Valid data were collected quarterly, and the antibiotic consumption data were expressed as the defined daily dose (DDD) per 100 inpatient days (ID). Bacterial resi… Show more

“…The rapid increase in carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) has been reported both locally and globally [12][13][14]30,31]. This increase in CRE is linked to the increased use and consumption of β-lactamase inhibitors [32,33].…”

“…22 In addition, increasing consumption of β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitors may also increase the frequency of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella spp. [23][24][25] K. pneumoniae can cause serious, life-threatening infections in humans in endemic and epidemic settings. 26 Resistance to carbapenems in Enterobacteriales is primarily linked to different mechanisms, in particular the production of carbapenemases.…”
