Surveillance of Antimicrobial Susceptibilities in Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Nanjing, China, 1999–2006

Abstract: Among N. gonorrhoeae strains isolated in Nanjing, China, plasmid mediated resistance including PPNG and TRNG increased significantly between 1999 and 2006. Chromosomally mediated resistance to both penicillin and ciprofloxacin was also high during this period. Spectinomycin resistance of N. gonorrhoeae was sporadic. Ceftriaxone and spectinomycin can be considered effective antimicrobial agents for the treatment of gonorrhea in Nanjing at the present time.

“…Since 1992, China has been part of the WHO Western Pacific Region (WPR) Resistance Surveillance Program; however, for several years, the reported data were only limited to several cities, such as Guangzhou (14), Nanjing (15), and Shanghai (16), and the AMR profiles were basically consistent with the patterns found in other regions of the WPR. To our knowledge, there has been no monitoring the AMR of N. gonorrhoeae in Changsha, a megacity close to Guangzhou, where STD incidence is one of the highest in China.…”

“…Because of increased spread of ciprofloxacin resistance in N. gonorrhoeae, only cephalosporins are now recommended to treat gonorrhea (del Rio et al, 2007). However, any of the currently recommended antibiotics can be substituted directly into the case as resistance to spectinomycin (Bala et al, 2005;Su et al, 2007), and reduced susceptibility to ceftriaxone (Tanaka et al, 2006) and cefixime (Wang et al, 2003) in N. gonorrhoeae have been reported. Instructors should access the CDC treatment guidelines for gonorrhea each year to obtain the latest updates (www.cdc.gov/std/treatment).…”
