Surgical treatment of spondylolisthesis using long arm screw: A literature review

Abstract: Background Spondylolisthesis refers to anterior displacement of the vertebral body in reference to the bordering vertebral bodies, causing segmental instability, that mostly occurs in the middle lumbar spine and the lumbosacral junction. If surgery is indicated, open technique with lumbar pedicle strew instrumentation is the standard therapy. Recently, minimally-invasive technique can be applied in spondylolisthesis surgery using percutaneous long-arm pedicle screws with a promising short- and lon… Show more

“…atients with spondylolisthesis often do not require surgical treatment and most of the patients can be treated and improved through conservative therapies [1,2]. In cases requiring surgical intervention, the optimal choice of patients based on the stage of the disease and the presence of underlying comorbidities can lead to the desired outcome of surgery [3].…”

“…7,8 Until now, the spondylolisthesis reduction technique has relied on posterior instrumentation, namely, bolts of the vertebral segment that has undergone listhesis and then in the final stage using a special reduction, called long arm pedicle screws. 9 Long-arm pedicle screw is a multi-axial pedicle screw with a long U-shaped screw head. In this way, the spondylolisthesis segment will be brought into alignment with the other vertebrae when the pedicle nuts and rods are being tightened.…”
