Surgical Treatment of Patients With Facial Neuromas-A Report of 26 Consecutive Operations

Abstract: Surgical removal of facial neuroma is a safe procedure with a low complication rate and a low recurrence rate. First symptoms are diverse and are predominantly derived from the facial and vestibulocochlear nerve. Facial nerve grafting is reliable, giving the patient an acceptable facial nerve function (HB III).

“…Autologous nerve grafts, which are nerve segments removed from the other part of the body, are used most commonly. Short segment replacement can be accomplished with the greater auricular nerve, whereas longer defects may require the sural nerve . However, compared to other treatments, this recognized “gold standard” technique for facial nerve repairing is limited by tissue availability, donor site morbidity, and secondary deformities.…”

“…Short segment replacement can be accomplished with the greater auricular nerve, whereas longer defects may require the sural nerve. [2][3][4] However, compared to other treatments, this recognized "gold standard'' technique for facial nerve repairing is limited by tissue availability, donor site morbidity, and secondary deformities. Therefore, development of an equally effective replacement for autograft is needed.…”

“…There is no significant difference between sural nerve and the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve in facial nerve outcomes. About 82% of the grafted patients with facial nerve neuromas regain Grade III during 10.1 ± 1.3 years' follow up (range, 2-19 ys) [16]. In other words, the vast majority of grafted cases finally gain an acceptable facial nerve recovery.…”
