Surgical Treatment of Distal Cholangiocarcinoma

Abstract: Distal cholangiocarcinoma (dCCA) is a rare malignancy arising from the epithelial cells of the distal biliary tract and has a poor prognosis. dCCA is often clinically silent and patients commonly present with locally advanced and/or distant disease. For patients identified with early stage, resectable disease, surgical resection with negative margins remains the only curative treatment strategy available. However, despite appropriate treatment and diligent surveillance, risk of recurrence remains high with nea… Show more

“…Currently, the only clinical treatment is surgical removal of the tumor [ 5 ]. However, the prognosis for surgical treatment of CCA is poor, with a survival rate of 20–40% in patients who undergo surgery [ 6 ]. Currently, there is no effective treatment for CCA, and it is necessary to explore new therapeutic drugs.…”

“…Distal cholangiocarcinoma (dCCA) is a malignant neoplasm located in the last portion of the biliary tract, specifically from the junction of the cystic and hepatic ducts to the ampulla of Vater [ 1 ]. This neoplasm is an aggressive form of epithelial origin, representing approximately 30% of all cholangiocarcinomas [ 2 ].…”
