Post-operative Atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a common complication post cardiac surgery. It can result in detrimental short-and long-term outcomes due to the increased risk of stroke, cardiac arrest and congestive heart failure in addition to prolonged intensive care and total hospital stay raising the overall healthcare cost. Accurately identifying predictors and biomarkers for POAF ensures that patients at greatest risk can be given the appropriate prophylactic measures; resources can be distributed to the groups who are most in need and where they will gain the optimum effect. Commonly recurring predictors can be investigated further to unveil the pathophysiology behind POAF, which has yet to be fully understood. This literature review aims to examine relevant studies on the proposed predictors of POAF: increased age, gender, history of atrial fibrillation, hypertension, cardiopulmonary bypass time and the use of beta blockers amongst others. This paper will discuss the significance of both the well-known and newfound risk factors to consolidate the areas that require further exploration in order to highlight those at risk and to unravel the mechanism behind POAF.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common sustained tachyarrhythmias worldwide, and its prevalence is positively correlated with aging. AF not only significantly reduces the quality of life of patients but also causes a series of complications, such as thromboembolism, stroke, and heart failure, increases the average number of hospitalizations of patients, and places a huge economic burden on patients and society. Traditional drug therapy and ablation have unsatisfactory success rates, high recurrence rates, and the risk of serious complications. Surgical treatment is highly traumatic. The nano drug delivery system has unique physical and chemical properties, and in the application of AF treatment, whether it is used to assist in enhancing the ablation effect or for targeted therapy, it provides a safer, more effective and more economical treatment strategy.

[3][4][5][6][7] The article by Zheng and colleagues 8 is a feasibility study to move the needle further toward the classic CM-III anatomy-based bi-atrial lesions using an MIS beating-heart thoracoscopic SA technique combined with single-stage endocardial CA. In a cohort of 27 patients, freedom from atrial tachyarrhythmia (AT) with or without antiarrhythmic drugs after a single hybrid procedure was 64% and 60% at 12 months, respectively, and the addition of a redo CA increased the freedom from atrial tachyarrhythmia to 77.8% and 74.1% at 12 months, respectively.…”
