Surgical treatment for acute small intestinal obstruction caused byParascaris equoruminfection in 15 horses (2002–2011)

Abstract: SummaryReasons for performing study: There is a consensus in the veterinary literature that Parascaris equorum (ascarid) impaction carries a poor prognosis. Hence surgery is often delayed and foals are often subjected to euthanasia after diagnosis of ascarid impaction is established. Our clinical impression was that ascarid impaction carries a better prognosis than previously reported. Objectives: Our expectation was that manually evacuating the impaction into the caecum, thus refraining from opening the small… Show more

“…All 3 studies reported the large majority of cases to be foals aged <12 months, although single cases as old as 5 years were encountered (Tatz et al . ). Two of the studies reported the proportion of ascarid impactions to be <0.5% of all colic surgeries performed in foals (Cribb et al .…”

“…Sex information was available from 2 of these studies, and the distribution was equal with 19 males and 18 females (Southwood et al 1996;Cribb et al 2006). All 3 studies reported the large majority of cases to be foals aged <12 months, although single cases as old as 5 years were encountered (Tatz et al 2012). Two of the studies reported the proportion of ascarid impactions to be <0.5% of all colic surgeries performed in foals (Cribb et al 2006) and of all surgical colics performed at the referral hospitals (Southwood et al 1996), respectively.…”
