Surgical simulation supplements reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellowship training

Abstract: Objective: To assess if a surgical boot camp improves laparoscopic skill among reproduction endocrinology and infertility (REI) fellows and increases fellow desire to incorporate surgical skills into practice and to examine whether fellowship in vitro fertilization (IVF) volume correlates with surgical efficiency. Design: Prospective evaluation. Setting: Simulation Center. Patient(s): Forty REI fellows. Intervention(s): Fellows were timed before and after training in laparoscopic suturing and knot tying and wh… Show more

“…REIs also apply their specialized training when making intro-operative decisions for treating pelvic disease to optimize reproductive outcomes [3 ▪▪ ]. Accordingly, there are fellowships associated with members of the SRS, and the SRS boot camp continues to provide invaluable training [19]. As such, reproductive surgery remains an essential part of fellowship training, and fellows still need sufficient surgical skills at the very minimum to perform operative hysteroscopy and laparoscopy [3 ▪▪ ].…”

“…As such, reproductive surgery remains an essential part of fellowship training, and fellows still need sufficient surgical skills at the very minimum to perform operative hysteroscopy and laparoscopy [3 ▪▪ ]. The incorporation of simulation, formal surgical mentorship and appropriate distribution of surgical cases throughout fellowship are promising strategies for allowing graduates to maintain skills [19].…”
