Surgical Removal of Lipoma by Lipo-Suction Surgery

Abstract: This report describes a new method of removing medium-to large-sized lipomas through a 0.5-cm incision using the techniques of lipo-suction surgery which was introduced in the United States in 1982 by French surgeons. Our series of six cases in which large-sized lipomas had been extracted showed satisfactory results with minimal incisional scars or evidence of recurrence during the follow-up period ranging from 6 to 14 months.

“…1,2 Patients often request removal of their lipomas as a result of concerns about growth, cosmesis, or because of symptoms arising from compression of local structures. Treatment traditionally includes surgical excision or liposuction depending on the size, anatomic location, and clinical characteristics of these relatively common, slowly growing mesenchymal neoplasms.…”

“…The advantages of liposuction for large lipomas are clear 1–4 . A small incision is the only entry required to remove a large tumor.…”

“…The usual lipoma is a small subcutaneous nodule traditionally treated by surgical excision. However, once a lipoma becomes 4 cm or larger in size, liposuction has several advantages over conventional surgery 1–4 . We report an atypical lipoma about 15 cm in diameter, which was treated by liposuction, and discuss the biological behavior of these tumors.…”

“…LIPOMAS ARE the most common soft tissue tumors, 1 with a prevalence rate of 2.1 per 1,000 2 and a stronger female predilection 3 . They account for almost half of all soft tissue tumors removed for any reason.…”

“…Recurrence of a lipoma is uncommon and has been traditionally attributed to incomplete removal. A growing body of contemporary literature supports the use of liposuction for removal of lipomas 3,6,7,8,9 . Arguably, this method has been useful in removal of lipomas large and small, especially those in cosmetically critical areas 10 .…”
