Surgical Outcomes of Laparoscopic and Open D3 Dissection for Clinical Stage II/III Descending Colon Cancer

Abstract: Aim: To compare the surgical outcomes of laparoscopic colectomy (LAC) with Japanese D3 dissection for descending colon cancer (DCC) with those of open colectomy (OC). Patients and Methods: Seventy-two patients who underwent OC or LAC with D3 dissection for clinical stage II/III DCC between September 2002 and June 2019 were evaluated in terms of short-term outcomes. The longterm outcomes of the 59 patients who underwent surgery between September 2002 and June 2016 were evaluated. Results: Twenty-six patients un… Show more

“…We also verified that a preoperative CEA level ≥2.5 ng/mL was an independent risk factor of recurrence and worse survival in stage I CRC. However, the reference range of CEA was set at <5 ng/mL in previous studies [ 32 ], we determined the cut-off value of CEA as 2.5 ng/mL to facilitate statistical analysis considering early-stage cancer. A recent study suggested that patients with high preoperative CEA levels in stage I-III rectal cancer had a high risk of early locoregional relapse and recurrence of distant metastasis after resection.…”

“…Kojima T et al 21 examined the efficacy of LO and OO in the treatment of undescended testes. Their conclusions confirm the results presented here, in that LO and OO both result in successful testicular growth, however LO can further reduce the surgical trauma and short-term surgical complications.…”

“…Complete mesocolic excision (CME) has demonstrated superior oncological outcomes compared to conventional colectomy in retrospective studies. 1,2 It has also shown to be a safe alternative to conventional resections in recent randomized controlled trials. 3,4 Particularly in transverse colon cancer (TCC), this involves a radical clearance of lymphatic tissue overlying the superior mesenteric vessels, resecting the omentum and peripancreatic lymph nodes.…”
