Surgical Outcome and Ocular Complications of Evisceration and Intraocular Prosthesis Implantation in Dogs with End Stage Glaucoma: a Review of 20 Cases

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Surgical outcome and complications following evisceration and implantation of intraocular silicone prosthesis (ISP) in 20 canine eyes with end-stage glaucoma were analyzed, including clinical signs, complications, cosmetic appearance, and owners' responses. The mean postoperative follow-up time was 312 days. Major short-term surgical complications were central corneal ulceration (6/20) and infections (3/20), while long-term complication was keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) (2/20). All patient owners … Show more

“…Evisceration with placement of intraocular silicone prostheses is an alternative to enucleation performed by many veterinary ophthalmologists. Short‐term complications associated with this procedure are corneal ulcerations and infections, while the most common long‐term complication is keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) 17 . A silicone prosthetic implant is also utilized in this procedure to fill the corneoscleral shell after intraocular contents are removed.…”

“…Enucleation is recommended for blind and painful eyes such as those affected with chronic inflammation, trauma, intraocular neoplasia, endophthalmitis, or glaucoma . Evisceration is a potentially more cosmetic surgical procedure typically performed for end‐stage glaucomatous eyes . In both procedures, a silicone prosthesis is placed either within the corneoscleral shell or the intraorbital space .…”

“…In veterinary medicine, ocular secretion and decrease of orbital volume can be noted in animals after more than one year of the surgical procedure (Rahal et al, 2000a). Corneal ulcer, between 2 to 11 days postsurgery and keratoconjunctivitis, between 2 to 16 weeks of the post-operative period were also described by Lin et al (2007).…”
