Surgical Management of pleural Complications of Lung and Liver Hydatid Cysts in 34 Patients

Abstract: The aim of this retrospective study was to review pleural complications and results of surgical management of patient with hydatid disease. Between 2000 and 2010, 34 patients among 260 patients with hydatid disease, were diagnosed with pleural complications. Findings are presented in relative frequencies tables. The most common pleural complication was empyema in 9 patients. The most common procedure was cystotomy, evacuation and decortication in 25 patients. In endemic area, pleural complications of hydatid c… Show more

“… 8 , 12 , 15 The aim of surgical intervention in pulmonary hydatid cysts are mainly the removal of the laminated membrane without causing intraoperative contamination and prevention of an intrapulmonary residual cystic space. 7 , 8 , 15 , 16 For this purpose, varying techniques, such as enucleation, pericystectomy, and simple cystotomy with or without capitonnage of the pericystic space can be chosen in proper conditions during the operation. 8 , 10 , 15 Radical pulmonary resections should be performed when the pulmonary parenchyma around the cyst is destroyed.…”

“…Hydatid disease, also known as echinococcosis, is a serious and problematic health issue worldwide, and this parasitic disease is widespread in most Mediterranean countries, West Asia, South America, the Far East, Australia, and East Africa [ 1 – 3 ]. Humans are intermediate and incidental hosts and are infected either through the direct route via exposure to or contact with infected dogs or other canines or indirect routes via consumption of food, water, and infected items on the ground [ 2 4 ].…”

“…Imaging tools, such as ultrasonography (U/S), abdominal computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), are useful devices to diagnose the disease. U/S and CT scans are the first diagnostic tools of choice and can be applied under all conditions [ 1 , 2 ]. Of the more invasive instruments, ERCP can help establish definitive detection and treatment with sphincterotomy in patients affected by intra-biliary rupture of a cyst, and MRCP can diagnose the site of the obstructions of the biliary system [ 6 , 7 , 10 , 11 ].…”
