Surgical management of hidradenitis suppurativa

Abstract: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic disease, which causes painful discomfort. The main regions involved in this disease are axillary, inguinal and perianal. The etiology is unknown at present. It is suggested that genetics, smoking and diabetes are involved in HS. General treatment consists of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory biological drugs. “…Afterwards, the most problematic aspect is wound closure, due to the wide excision (very large wounds, e.g., bottocks). In such cases, the use of reconstructive techniques is required, such as skin flaps, skin grafts or both [ 10 , 11 ]. The surgical reconstructive techniques for HS are limitless.…”

“…In patients’ therapy, several methods are used, such as topical treatment, systemic antibiotic therapy, hormones, biologic therapy and surgery [ 13 , 14 , 15 ]. First-line antibiotics therapies are clindamycin and the systemic use of clindamycin and rifampicine [ 2 ].…”
