Surgical lighting with contrast enhancement based on spectral reflectance comparison and entropy analysis

Abstract: Surgical light is important for helping the surgeon easily identify specific tissues during an operation. We propose a spectral reflectance comparison model to optimize the light-emitting diode light spectrum in the operating room. An entropy evaluation method, meant specifically for surgical situations, was developed to evaluate images of biological samples. White light was mixed to achieve an optimal spectrum, and images of different tissues under the light were captured and analyzed. Results showed that ima… Show more

“…The only surgical specialties where one spectrum was clearly rated as more effective included only a single surgeon, indicating that this result is not generalisable utilising only this data set. Considered together with surgeons' comments during the experiment, and existing research on task-specific spectra, 1,3,20 the relationship between light spectrum and surgical specialty may warrant further study. In any case, the small and unbalanced sample of this study makes demographic-based conclusions tenuous and premature.…”

“…Next, prototyping the designed illuminant and its evaluation is essential for practical use. In [9], [10], the authors optimized the spectra of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and implemented an LED ceiling system. The authors optimized surgical illuminants by contrast enhancement based on entropy analysis.…”

“…Some previous studies used computer simulations to optimize the illuminant [4][5][6]. In [7] and [8] the authors optimized the light-emitting diode (LED) light spectrum for surgical lighting and implemented a LED ceiling system. They optimized the spectrum so as to maximize the gray-level contrast.…”

“…We have also been developing an LED-based lighting system designed for surgery [9]. While the authors in [7] and [8] maximized the gray-level contrast, we aimed at maximizing the specific color difference between healthy and ischemic statuses (our first constraint). Another novelty we have considered is the introduction of an additional constraint related to the whiteness of illuminant.…”
