Histologic grade is an important determinant in clinical outcome of human osteosarcoma (OS). In this study, the histologic characteristics of primary and metastatic canine OS were evaluated using a new classification system. Histologic characteristics were classified in 166 primary and 34 metastatic canine OS. Prognostic variables for clinical outcome were determined using multivariate analysis. Most OS were histologically characterized by severe to extreme cellular pleomorphism, a variable number of mitoses, small to moderate amounts of matrix, a high percentage of tumor cells, and minimal to moderate amounts of necrosis. Tumor invasion into vessels was present in 117/152 (71%) tumors, and 12/50 (24%) of the regional lymph nodes had evidence of metastasis. Classification of the 166 tumors resulted in seven (4%) grade 1, 34 (21%) grade II, and 125 (75%) grade III OS. In the multivariate analysis, histologic grade III OS and elevated pretreatment plasma alkaline phosphatase (AP) levels were independent predictors of clinical outcome. Dogs with high-grade tumors and elevated AP should be carefully evaluated for the presence of metastatic disease before starting adjunctive therapy protocols.

Feline Injection Site-Associated Sarcoma (FISS) is a neoplasm that implies in reduction of quality of life and overall survival in feline patients. A retrospective study of 13 cases of FISS was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of surgical treatment associated to chemotherapy with doxorubicin or carboplatin. Local recurrence occurred in all patients. Patients treated with surgery and chemotherapy presented a longer overall survival and disease-free interval when compared to those that solely received surgical treatment, although no statistical significance was observed (p= 0.3360 and 0.7506, respectively). Surgery remains as the main option for FISS treatment. L'objectif de cette étude préliminaire est de vérifier l'efficacité et l'intérêt d'un traitement oral aux extraits de gui fermenté (Viscum album fermenté 1 ) chez des chats, après exérèse de fibrosarcome et comme unique thérapie. Vingtdeux chats ont été suivis lors de cette étude multicentrique. Le traitement est très bien accepté et toléré, n'entraînant aucun effet secondaire. Il semble au moins aussi performant que les traitements classiques actuels les plus efficaces (radiothérapie). La médiane du temps de survie est de 65,4 mois et celle du délai d'apparition d'une récidive, de 53 mois. Ces résultats demandent à être confirmés par d'autres études. In this multicentric study of 22 cats, the treatment was very well accepted and tolerated. No side effects were observed. The treatment seems at least as effective as the best current conventional treatment (radiotherapy). Median survival time was 65.4 months and median disease-free interval 53 months. These results need to be confirmed by further studies.

Abstract: Aggressive surgical excision with wide margins appears to contribute to extended tumor-free interval and survival times in cats with soft tissue FSA. Controlled prospective studies are needed to determine the efficacy of RTH in treatment.
