Surgical Excision of Soft Tissue Fibrosarcomas in Cats

Abstract: Aggressive surgical excision with wide margins appears to contribute to extended tumor-free interval and survival times in cats with soft tissue FSA. Controlled prospective studies are needed to determine the efficacy of RTH in treatment.

“…13,30 High-grade tumors were associated with significantly decreased ST and DFI in this study, similar to ST and DFI for other mesenchymal tumor types such as hemangiosarcoma 28 and splenic, 34 synovial cell, 39 and feline soft-tissue sarcoma. 9 In two studies, tumor grade in a group of dogs with OS was evaluated using multivariate analysis, but higher risk was not associated with higher tumor grade. 19,36 Both studies, however, included relatively small populations and one specific tumor site.…”

“…One of the widespread prognostic factors for FISS is complete excision with clean margins of neoplasm at the first surgical procedure, which seems to contribute towards an increase in DFI (Davidson et al, 1997;Hershey et al, 2000) and OS (Davidson et al, 1997), although two recent studies reported an absence of correlation between the status of surgical margins and prognosis (Cohen et al, 2001, Martano et al, 2005. The obtainment of clean surgical margins is considered important for predicting local recurrence of FISS (Kobayachi et al, 2002;Giudice et al, 2010).…”

“…Complete tumor excision with clear margins at the initial surgical intervention seems to improve prognosis (Davidson et al, 1997;Hershey et al, 2000). Morrison and Starr (2001) state that there are no satisfactory treatment options and prognosis is poor.…”

“…La thérapeutique conventionnelle est essentiellement chirurgicale associée à une radiothérapie puis éventuelle-ment à une chimiothérapie. La qualité de la chirurgie, la possibilité d'effectuer une exérèse complète de la tumeur avec une incision à au moins 3 cm du tissu tumoral sont un facteur pronostic primordial [8]. Ainsi Hershey et al [12] ont montré que la prévalence des récidives peut varier de 8 à 80 % en fonction de l'acte chirurgical (Fig.…”
