Surgical Correction of a Sacral Meningomyelocele in a Dog

Abstract: A 15 wk old male unilateral cryptorchid German shepherd dog weighing 18 kg was referred for a nonhealing cutaneous lesion dorsally at the level of the sacrum, urinary incontinence, and a deviated tail. MRI revealed spina bifida and meningomyelocele continuous with the skin surface. Surgical correction of the meningomyelocele involved closure of the open meningeal defect, transection of the abnormal spinal nerves to the skin surface, and closure of the skin defect with a good outcome. Histopathology confirmed a… Show more

“…Sporadic occurrence has been described in calves (21) and less frequently in other species (1,3,21). Different forms of spinal dysraphism such as meningocele or meningomyelocele can be associated with other neural tube malformations in dogs (3,11,17,18) and cats (14). Here we describe the first case of a lipomeningocele and spina bifida associated with diplomyelia in a dog.…”

“…The incidence of lipomyelomeningoceles is 0.57 per 10 000 life births in man (4). In veterinary medicine lipomyelomeningoceles and lipomeningoceles are rare conditions (3,18,20) and there are only a few case reports of meningomyelocele or split cord malformations in dogs (1,11,16,17) and cats (12,14). A particular form has been described in Manx cats, characterized by sacrocaudal dysgenesis (12).…”

“…Moderate to severe forms of NTD, such as SBO with MMC or MC, are typically diagnosed in young animals. Although a congenital anomaly may be seen in any breed, certain breeds have been overrepresented with spina bifida occulta such as the English bulldogs Wilson et al, 1979;Fingeroth et al, 1989, Brunetti et al, 1993Ployart et al, 2013) and the German shepherd dogs (Clayton, 1983;Song et al, 2014). A meningocoele has also been described in a Collie (Wilson et al, 1979) (Figure 3).…”

“…The simplest form of CSD is dorsal spina bifida and is usually clinically insignificant, with no or minor neural anomalies (Figure 2). Occasionally, a subcutaneous mass may be present in SBO, which consists of a meningocele Wilson et al, 1979;Gómez et al, 2012;Song et al, 2014). Another form of SBO are dermal sinus tracts (Miller andTobias, 2003, Kiviranta et al, 2011;Song et al, 2016).…”
