Surgery and electrochemotherapy treatment of incompletely excised mammary carcinoma in two male pet rats (<i>Rattus norvegicus</i>)

Abstract: Two male rats (Rattus norvegicus; 18 and 24 months old), were referred for treatment of large masses located in the axillary area. Following total body radiography and hematological and serum biochemical analysis, the rats were anesthetized, and the masses were surgically removed. Both lesions were diagnosed as mammary carcinoma based on histopathological diagnosis. The tumor beds were treated with two sessions of electrochemotherapy (ECT), two weeks apart. ECT involved cisplatin administration in the tumor be… Show more

“…Electrochemotherapy is also being used in the treatment of exotic pets, such as ferrets, cockatiels, turtles, rats, and hedgehogs. [85][86][87][88][89][90][91] Especially in turtles, where fibropapillomatosis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality of sea turtles, electrochemotherapy is a very promising treatment option. Complete responses were obtained after electrochemotherapy with intralesional bleomycin in two treated turtles presenting fibropapillomatosis and one with squamous cell carcinoma, with no healing complications and no recurrence up to 1 year.…”

“…ECT with intralesional cisplatin has been proven effective and safe for the treatment of equine cutaneous sarcoids, used either as single or adjuvant treatment depending on the studies . Finally, ECT has also been reported for the treatment of miscellaneous tumours in exotic species (ie, ferret and pet rats) with promising results …”

“…46,47 Finally, ECT has also been reported for the treatment of miscellaneous tumours in exotic species (ie, ferret and pet rats) with promising results. 48,49 To the best of our knowledge, there are only two papers that investigated ECT on canine sarcomas. 50,51 In the former, 22 dogs with incompletely excised high-grade sarcomas were treated with bleomycin administered in the tumour bed followed by application of biphasic electric pulses.…”

“…In second patient, no tumour regrowth was seen 8 months after treatment. Different studies reported an excellent treatment response of ECT with cisplatin or bleomycin in tumours of different histology with minimal side effects in dogs 10 , 11 , cats 12 , horses 13 , pet rats 14 , and reptiles 15 , 16 . In our cases, only some muscle contractions of the patient were observed during the application of electric pulses.…”

“…In animals, pain during ECT can be avoided using sedation and/or general anaesthesia. 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 Gaseous anaesthesia with isoflurane was used in our cases to prevent pain and facilitate proper position of patients for tumour manipulation, the application of chemotherapeutic agent, and positioning of electrodes. Meloxicam, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory analgesic was prescribed to the patients before and after ECT to reduce pain and inflammation.…”
