Surfactant deficiency in full‐term newborns with transient tachypnea delivered by elective C‐section

“…It has been suggested that TTN and RDS form part of the same spectrum of disease process. Evidence suggests that full-term infants with TTN may have surfactant deficiency [ 52 ] and that antenatal maternal administration of corticosteroids may prevent TTN [ 53 , 54 ], adding weight to this claim. However, the different clinical course and distinct chest radiograph appearances are evidence for different disease processes.…”

“…A similar study was done by Fiori et al [ 15 ] and deficiency or dysfunction of the surfactant system is involved in the majority of cases of respiratory distress in near term and possibly term infants. In another study which 544 infants were born to via elective cesarean delivery examined and oral fluid samples were obtained in the delivery room immediately after birth, and gastric fluid was collected within the first hour of life [ 16 ]. They suggest that TTN was associated with surfactant dysfunction.…”

“…1 In newborns, World Health Organization(WHO) declares tachypnea as a respiratory rate of more than 60/minute. 2 Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) is a common differential in any newborn who develops respiratory distress immediately after birth at term gestation. One-third of the newborns hospitalized due to respiratory distress are ultimately diagnosed with TTN.…”
