Functional Importance of Surface Texture Parameters

Areal 3D analysis of surface texture gives more opportunities than a study of 2D profiles. Surface topography evaluation, considered as 3D dimensional analysis in micro or nanoscales, plays an important role in many fields of science and life. Among many texture parameters, those connected with height are the most often used. However, there are many other parameters and functions that can provide additional important information regarding functional behaviour of surfaces in different applications. The knowledge about the functional importance of various surface properties is low. This review tries to fill this gap. Surface texture parameters are presented in various groups: height, spatial, hybrid, functional, feature, and others. Based on experiences of the present authors and literature review, the relationships among various surface parameters and functional properties are described. A proposal of a selection of parameters on the basis of their functional significations is provided. Considerations for future challenges are addressed.

A Multiscale Topographical Surface Analysis of High Entropy Alloys Coatings by Laser Melting

High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) coatings obtained by laser melting (LM) technique were studied through a multiscale topographical surface analysis using a focus variation microscope. The laser melting creates a multiscale topography from under-powder size (incomplete or complete powder melting) to upper-powder size (process conditions). The surface topography must be optimized because of the significant influence on friction and material transfer during sliding wear. The analyses were shown that different pre-melting zone interactions were present. Statistical analysis based on covariance analyses is allowed to highlight the different process melting scales. The best LM parameter values to minimize Surface Heterogeneity were laser power (Pw) of 55 W, laser exposition time (te) of 1750 µs, and distance between two pulses (dp) of 100 µm.

The planimetric and altimetric accuracies of the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) obtained from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) depend on some photogrammetric parameters such as flight height, flight speed, and/or ground sample distance. In the last few years, the study of computer vision algorithms has increased focusing on their importance on the photogrammetric reconstruction process for land surface mapping. According to this, the main goal of this paper was to evaluate the performance of different photogrammetric processing software, such as Open Drone Map (ODM), Agisoft PhotoScan, and Pix4D, on DEM accuracy. For this purpose, a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone was used for the acquisition of 600 images in a difficult topography area (630 ha) with 27 Ground Control Points (GCP) previously established. The photogrammetric products were generated, and a statistical analysis was carried out for the comparison of the DEMs. The results of the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) show that the planimetric and altimetric accuracy of Agisoft PhotoScan (RMSExy = 0.514 m; RMSEz = 0.162 m) is greater than those obtained using Pix4D and ODM. Unsatisfactory results were obtained with ODM since deformations and high planimetric and altimetric errors were identified in the orthomosaic and DEM, which was related to inefficient key point detection and an incomplete mosaic construction process. Agisoft PhotoScan modeled the anthropogenic objects as part of the land surface, while Pix4d smoothed the terrain, eliminating these anthropogenic objects and not considering them as part of the ground surface.
